Let yourself be led by beauty… from the mountains to the sea.
For a more challenging biking stage on the Alps 2 Ocean, the 42km section between Lake Ohau and Omarama is fantastic.
The Jollie Biker will meet you at the depot, or pick you up from your accommodation, and drive over to Lake Ohau (30mins), dropping you at the Lake Ohau Lodge for a quick coffee, before you start your day’s adventure.
Setting off from the Lodge, you will follow the uphill cycle trail that traverses the lower slopes of the Ruataniwha Conservation Park. This section will get the heart pumping and blood flowing so make sure you get a good energy chocolate hit before you embark on the climb and stop for rests and water whenever you need to. You will cycle through stunning native beech forest, and at the summit (900m above sea level), enjoy stunning views back across the basin to the Benmore Range.
It’s a case of what goes up must come down as you enjoy the rolling descent to Quailburn Road (20km). Take time to explore the historic woolshed at the end of Quailburn Road (toilet facilities here) before enjoying a lovely downhill ride to Omarama. If you’re feeling really adventurous, take a side trip off Quailburn Road to see the Clay Cliffs (14kms). Once Quailburn Road meets the highway (35.6km), the off-road trail winds alongside below the highway edge for a short trip into the country town.
After such a big day, you will really have earned a chance to relax those tired muscles with a luxurious soak in the Omarama Hot Tubs. Once your muscles are working again your Jollie Biker Shuttle will collect you at an agreed time to take you and all your gear back to your vehicle and accommodation Twizel.
On reaching your final Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail destination with The Jollie Biker, make sure to reflect on this adventure and be proud of the distance covered and amazing sights of the New Zealand South Island you have witnessed.
The team at The Jollie Biker congratulate you and hope this will be a journey you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
