A2O Cycle Trail – 7 days cycling
The Jollie Biker will meet you at our depot – 193 Glen Lyon Road or at your accomodation. After introductions are made, we’ll have a bit of a chat about the exciting days ahead to ensure we can make your trip as comfortable and memorable as possible. We’ll then fit you out with your bike and gear if required (make sure to pre-book). Maybe enjoy a tasty dinner out in one of the great restaurants in Twizel – we’re happy to give you recommendations and can arrange bookings if you like.
Transfers to Twizel can be arranged for you.
Day 1: Transfer to Aoraki Mt Cook to Braemar Station – 35kms:
Enjoy a hearty breakfast then The Jollie Biker will transfer you to Aoraki Mt Cook, arriving at the official start of the A2O, the Whitehorse Camping Ground – from here, a warm up ride 7kms to the airport.
A Helicopter transfer takes you to Tasman Point across the glacially fed braided river taking in the stunning scenery of the Southern Alps and Lake Pukaki. From here, you will commence your 28km bike. Tonight, a special nights accommodation at one of the high countries working stations, Braemar Station. Enjoy an amazing dinner prepared just for you by the station owners Julia & Hamish McKenzie
Day 2: Bike Braemar Station to Twizel – 42kms:
This morning after a sumptuous breakfast your ride takes you from Braemar Station to Tekapo B Power Station, continuing along the shores ofLake Pukaki a wonderful ride with Aoraki Mt Cook as your background, it doesn’t get much better than this! Perhaps a stop at the Visitor Info Centre and Mt Cook Alpine Salmon shop for an ice-cream or fresh salmon treat.A further 10km bike across the Pukaki flats brings you back into Twizel. Enjoy a second night returning to your original Twizel accommodation.
Day 3: Bike Twizel to Lake Ohau – 38kms:
Breakfast booked at a local Cafe (or own arrangements), then on your bike….to Lake Ohau. Head out of town to the Ohau Canal, an easy ride along the canal to an off-road trail descending down to the lake foreshore, taking you to the Ohau Weir and onto the lake foreshore where it eventually meets up with the sealed Lake Ohau and onto Lake Ohau Lodge, your accommodation for tonight. Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch packs included
Day 4: Bike Lake Ohau to Omarama – 45kms:
Enjoy breakfast at the Lodge dining room, then commence the bike up over the Tambrae Saddle, reaching the highest point on the A2O trail at 900m above sea level – soak up the spectacular views here before starting the downhill, to Quailburn Road, and the historic woolshed. The second half of the day is a downhill cycle down Quailburn Road, some gravel and then onto sealed road, before riding alongside the Ahuriri River and arriving into the small country town of Omarama. Enjoy a well-earned soak at the Omarama Hot Tubs. Your muscles will thank you. Accommodation is booked at a local Motel. Dinner not included
Day 5: Bike Omarama to Kurow – 52kms to 64kms:
Enjoy a pre booked breakfast at The Wrinkly Rams or your own arrangements. Then on your bike for a lovely day’s ride – over the Omarama saddle and down along the shore of Lake Benmore and into Sailors Cuttings, then an 11km on-road climb over the saddle to Otematata…maybe a coffee fix here before a short sharp climb up the Benmore Dam for an awesome photo stop on top of the earth dam. A leisurely ride along the shores of Lake Aviemore brings you out at the Aviemore Dam If you would like, The Jollie Biker can meet you, and transfer you into Kurow to avoid the next 12kms State Highway section (we will chat about this beforehand) Accommodation is booked at a local B&B. Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch packs included
** If you wish to bike the State Highway section into Kurow, this will take the total ride to 64kms
Day 6: Bike Kurow to Duntroon- 28kms:
After breakfast, you will enjoy a more relaxing day today, leaving Kurow you will follow the Waitaki River with stops at Kurow Winery (a great coffee stop). Crossing the Otiake River and the Otekaieke River the trail follows the highway to the Takiroa Maori rock art site, which is across the road from the trail. After visiting the rock art site, retrace your steps and continue on the trail that heads back down to the Waitaki River through the Duntroon Wetlands before emerging in the centre of Duntroon. Accommodation is booked at a local B&B. Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch packs included
Day 7: Bike Duntroon to Oamaru – 54kms:
From Duntroon you head to the unique rock formations known as Elephant Rocks. Today is a mix of on and off road sections winding through valleys surrounded by limestone escarpments. To the old Rakis Railway Tunnel and onto Windsor and over lush North Otago farmland on the west side of Oamaru. Arriving at Weston, you have a fantastic downhill into the Oamaru Botanic Gardens, before coming out in the Heritage Precinct, and the A2O finish line at the Harbourside
The Jollie Biker will meet you at the finish line with your luggage, then after the celebratory photos, maybe a coffee at the Rusty cafe, or a beer at Scott’s brewery …and a dip in the Pacific if you dare…. you’ll be transported to your accommodation in Oamaru.

Day 9 – Departure day:
The Jollie Biker can book your transfers to Christchurch or Queenstown or arrange a shuttle back to Twizel.
Included with our self guided tours; Bike hire, panniers, helmets, maps, GPS trackers, 24 support. shuttles, luggage transfers (1 x 15kg piece per person), meals where requested.
We can also arrange vehicle parking at our depot or transfers to and from Twizel
